Rock Climbing - Boulder Canyon - May 05, 2004

DSCN1330.jpg

Mike, Marella, and I climbed in Boulder Canyon after work Wednesday, May 05, 2004. These photos were taken at The Boulderado, on the climb 'Idle Hands (5.6)'. The amazing thing about Boulder is that this crag is less than 10 miles from downtown (and it's a long way up the canyon by Boulder standards!), so we could swing by after work and still get in a couple hours of quality climbing.

Bear Lake / Dream Lake Hike - Rocky Mountain NP - February 22, 2004

RMNP_Chris_and_Susan_above_Bear_Lake_01_20040222.jpg

This was a great day for a snowshoe trip in Rocky Mountain National Park. We hiked from Bear Lake, past Emerald Lake, to Dream Lake. Dream Lake sits high in Tyndall Gorge, below Hallet Peak and Flattop Mountain.

Mount Bierstadt - May 08, 2004

DSCN1352.jpg

I climbed Mount Bierstadt on Saturday, May 08, 2004. I took the standard West Slopes route with the intention of crossing the Sawtooth ridge to Mount Evans, then descending a large, prominent, west-facing coulouir on Evans' west slopes. After summiting Bierstadt in 1hr 53min, I wound up bailing off the Sawtooth ridge at about 13,500' due to deep unconsolidated snow and evidence of recent avalanche activity.

Mount Sanitas Hike - May 01, 2004

DSCN1245.JPG

Mount Sanitas (6,863 feet) is a small Front Range peak virtually in downtown Boulder. You can literally walk to the trailhead from Pearl Street in about 10 minutes. It's a very pleasant short hike (3.3 miles round trip, 1400 feet of elevation gain) that offers great views of Boulder and the Front Range. Susan and I did this Saturday afternoon, May 01, 2004.

South St Vrain Canyon - May 29, 2004

DSCN1558.jpg

Saturday, May 29, 2004 we climbed at Lower Infirmary Slab in South St. Vrain Canyon, near Lyons, Colorado. The routes consisted of granite slabs with highly sandbagged ratings, but the climbing was still fun.

Twin Sisters - Rocky Mountain National Park - May 02, 2004

DSCN1304.jpg

Susan and I did the nice hike to the summit of Twin Sisters (11,428 ft) on Sunday, May 02, 2004. It was a perfect bluebird day, temps were in the 60s at the base, and 40s and windy at the summit. Twin Sisters is a great hike because it relatively easy and short (4 miles each way), but has commanding views of Long's Peak's massive east face. One of these days I'll drag myself out of bed early enough (about 3am) to get some photos of the alpenglow on Long's as the sun rises.

Mount Neva and Mount Jasper - June 13, 2004

DSCN1751.jpg

Susan and I did our first trip in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, to climb Mt Neva and Mt Jasper. The weather was a little overcast and threatening, but the route on Neva was awesome. We climbed the Desdomona Couloir, which reached about 45-50 degrees in steepness. Snow conditions were perfect.

Green Mountain - May 16, 2004

DSCN1407.jpg

Susan, Lhotse, and I hiked up Green Mountain on a beautiful spring day. Green Mountain (8144ft) is the mountain that contains the legendary Flatirons, which make up the western skyline of Boulder.

Missouri Mountain (14,067') - June 20, 2004

DSCN1897.jpg

Mike, Marella, Susan, and I did a nice climb of Missouri Mountain (14,067), in the Sawatch Range, south of Leadville. Missouri is a hard-to-see 14er tucked in behind Belford and Oxford. It was a beautiful spring day, but the snow conditions were lousy from a week of rain... lots of postholing to our waists.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park - May 21-23, 2004

DSCN1548.jpg

Susan, Lhotse, and I joined Yannick, Frank, Rob, and Christina for a 2 day backpacking trip in Golden Gate Canyon State Park. The trip included an off-trail bushwack to the summit of Tremont Mountain (~10,300ft), which provided stunning views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness.

Mount Bierstadt - July 04, 2004

Sue and I climbed Mount Bierstadt via the standard West Slopes route. It was an enjoyable way to spend the 4th of July.

Mount Democrat - July 18, 2004

DSCN2298.jpg

Chris Stubbs, Susan, and I climbed Mount Democrat via the East Ridge/Slopes route. We intended to do the Decalibron (Democrat, Bross, Cameron, and Lincoln), but poor weather at the summit of Democrat made us change our minds and opt to come back another day. Visibility at the summit was approx 100 feet. Torrential rain was falling in Fairplay as we left, so the decision was probably warranted.

Mike, Marella, Susan and I climbed La Plata Peak (14, 336') via the standard Northwest Ridge (Grade II, Class 2) route. It was 9.0 miles with about 4500' of elevation gain. The weather was perfect... sunny day with very little wind.

Mount Audubon - October 23, 2004

DSCN3367.jpg

Susan and I climbed Mount Audubon (13,221') in the Indian Peaks Wilderness today. It was warm (about 20F on the summit) and sunny, but extremely windy. I'd guess the winds at the summit were gusting to 70-80mph.

Half Mountain - December 11, 2004

DSCN3545.jpg

A large group of us (Me, Susan, Mike, Marella, Yannick, Peter, Tim, and Susan N) attempted Half Mountain on Saturday, December 11, 2004. We were greeted with deep powder and gale force winds. After getting to within 200 vertical feet of the summit and being blown all over the place, we bailed out and headed down.
