Devil's Backbone Run - Ft Collins - January 13, 2008

devils-bbone-20080113-1060.jpg

Thirteen of the Special Idiots met in Fort Collins for a spectacular run along the Devil's Backbone/Blue Sky trails. Most in the group did 21 miles, a few did 22.5 miles, and Kari and I did 27 miles. It's a great place for early season runs since the lack of tree cover helps the snow melt off quickly.

Mount Silverheels - February 23, 2008

IMG_3342.jpg

The 14ers.com winter gathering this year was Mount Silverheels (13,822') near Breckenridge. About 35-40 people showed up to do this one, which in itself is crazy! The climb was pretty forgettable, but it was really great to meet so many nice folks throughout the day. Most people met for beers afterward, but we had to be back home by 7pm and couldn't make that.

Colorado Trail Epic Run - May 10, 2008

ct-epic-20080510-1330_.jpg

Charles, Tress, Mike Priddy, Joe and I did an epic trail run of the Colorado Trail on May 10, 2008. It was epic because of waist deep snow near the end (covered with a thin crust). A simple 6-7 hour run turned into a huge 12 hour ordeal. We finished right after dark. The run wound up being almost 38 miles, with more than 6500' of elevation gain.

Rim Rock Run - November 12, 2005

DSC_4900.jpg

Peter and I did the Rim Rock Run on Saturday, November 12, 2005. This is a 37k (22.6 mile) run through the Colorado National Monument, from the East entrance to the West entrance, along the Rim Rock Road. The race was absolutely brutal, and kicked my butt. I finished in a paltry 4:09:23 and Peter blazed into the finish in 2:59:12! It was a great event, and we plan to do it next year (although I'll train much harder for the next one!).

Hardrock 100 Endurance Run - July 14-16, 2006

DSC_7196.jpg

The annual Hardrock 100 Endurance Run took place July 14-16 this year. Peter and I have been slowly getting sucked into this crazy idea of running an ultra, so we headed down to Silverton to volunteer at this year's race. We figured it would be a good way to see what it's all about. It was a really cool time, and I'm pretty much hooked now. While working the Chapman Aid Station I decided to try to photograph most of the runners (as my Quesadilla cooking duties would allow) as they came through. If you see yourself here (and if the photo turned out ok) and you want a full resolution copy (to make a print, etc), drop me a line and I'll send it to you.

Pikes Peak Ascent - August 19, 2006

ppa-1060.jpg

On August 19, 2006 Charles, Mike, Marella, Marella's Dad, Caroline, and Caroline's Dad ran the Pikes Peak Ascent. This half marathon starts in Manitou Springs, CO (about 6800') and runs up the Barr Trail, finishing on the 14,115' summit of Pikes Peak.

Boulder Backroads Marathon - September 24, 2006

DSC_8557.jpg

On September 24, 2006 I ran the Boulder Backroads Marathon for my 2nd marathon ever (and 2nd in a month!). It was a perfect morning, cold and clear. The race started at 7am at the Rez and wound through the mostly dirt backroads north of Boulder. I felt amazingly good until mile 18, then it all fell apart! I had horrible hamstring cramping. I was on a sub-4 hour time until then, and wound up a 4:27. The course was great, mostly dirt and had about 1100' of elevation gain. The aid stations were well-manned and well stocked. Overall, a very well put on event.

Pikes Peak Marathon - August 20, 2006

ppm-1900.jpg

Peter and I ran the Pikes Peak Marathon on Sunday, August 20th, 2006. The run starts in Manitou Springs, CO and follows the Barr trail to the summit of Pikes Peak and then back. This is billed as the hardest marathon in the United States at 26.2 miles, 7815' of elevation gain, almost all on rocky trail, and topping out at the 14,115' summit of Pikes Peak for the highest point. As usual, Matt Carpenter destroyed the field, finishing in about 3hrs 35min. Peter came in at 5hrs 49min (beating his goal of sub-6) and I came in at 7hrs 17min (beating my goal of sub-7:30). It was an incredibly hard run, especially for my first marathon, but it was a great time!

Goblin Valley Ultra - 50km Run - Utah - October 28, 2006

goblin-1080.jpg

Peter and I ran our first ultramarathon (longer than 26.2 miles) this past weekend. We did the Goblin Valley Ultra 50km endurance run in Goblin Valley State Park, Utah. The weather was perfect, sunny and near freezing at the start with a high near 70 by the end. It was an incredibly fun event. Peter ran about 4hr 55min and I finished in 5hr 58min. The ultrarunning crowd is super friendly and laid back. I can't wait to do the next one!

Moab Red Hot 50k+ - Moab, UT - February 17, 2007

moab-red-hot-1210.jpg

On February 17, 2007 Peter and I ran the Moab Red Hot 50k+ ultramarathon in Moab, UT. The course was a spectacular 34 mile path that used the Gemini Bridges, Gold Bar, Golden Spike, and Poison Spider Mesa trails. Total elevation gain was around 4200'. I finished in 7hr 10min despite really bad shin splints and TA tendonitis at the start (and the end!).

Greenland Trails 50k Ultramarathon - April 14, 2007

greenland50k-1080.jpg

Greenland Trails 50k Ultramarathon at the Douglas County Open Space on April 14, 2007. Conditions at the start were cold and snowy and by the end things had become warm and muddy!

Click here for my Race Report.

Overall it was a great time. I managed to lower my PR to 5:41 for 50k. Still slow, but not quite as slow :-)

San Juan Solstice 50 Mile Run - June 16, 2007

sjs50-10410.jpg

On Saturday, June 16, 2007 I attempted to run my first 50 mile mountain run. It was an utter disaster, mostly due to a nasty case of brochitis. I wound up dropping out at mile 28 in a lightning storm and hiking another 8 or so miles out to civilization.

My full trip report can be found HERE.

Moab Alpine to Slickrock 50 Mile Run - Moab, UT - September 22, 2007

IMG_2304.jpg

Peter and I ran the Moab Alpine to Slickrock 50 mile endurance run on September 22, 2007. The course was a 50 mile point to point that started on the south end of the La Sal mountains, outside of Moab, UT. If coursed mostly northward, crossing many passes and finally dropping all the way down to the Slickrock trail. The total elevation gain was 11,003' and the loss was about 12,000'. This was my 2nd attempt at a 50 miler, after my DNF at the San Juan Solstice. I was hoping to just squeak in under the 14 hour cutoff, but wound up far exceeding my expectations by finishing in 12:37. This is by far the most beautiful race I've run. The scenery was spectacular and the weather was absolutely perfect. Chris puts on a great race, I'd highly recommend this one for a scenic (but hard!) 50 miler.

IMG_3372-lg.JPG

On March 08, 2008 I ran the Land Between the Lakes 50 mile race in Grand Rivers, Kentucky. Conditions were rough: new snow, mud, water, and cold. The race was tough! I finished in 10:10:01. Jonathan Phillips (#115) ran his first race, the 23k and finished great!

Colorado Trail - Kenosha Pass to Georgia Pass - July 17, 2004

DSCN2241.jpg

Scott Gentry, Matt, and myself road the Colorado Trail on Saturday, July 17, 2004. Matt turned back at about 4.8 miles, for 9.6 miles total. Scott continued a couple miles up the climb to Georgia Pass and had the sense to turn back, for 16 miles total. I continued to Georgia Pass and got rained on for over two hours and returned cold and bonked... but it was still a great ride!

Monarch Crest Trail - Colorado - Sept 05, 2004

DSCN2718.jpg

Mason, Jay, and I rode the famous Monarch Crest Trail near Salida, Colorado on Sunday Sep 05, 2004. We woke to rime (ice that forms on cold things such as trees and rocks from humid air/clouds blowing over them) covering everything above 11,000'. The low at the trailhead (11,300') was 19F, but had warmed to a balmy 32F by the time we started at 10:00am. The rime actually gave the ride an awesome surreal quality. This trail is everything you've read about and easily lives up to it's Top-5 in the US ranking... I highly recommend it!

Arches National Park - May 2005

Susan, Lhotse, and I did a 3-day trip to Moab, UT and Arches National Park. We didn't have the best weather, as it was rainy and cold the first two days, but the last day wound up being nice and sunny and warm. We hike almost all of the trails in Arches, and I took about 800 photos (pared down considerable here, so as not to bore anyone too much).
