Pikes Peak Marathon - August 20, 2006

Peter and I ran the Pikes Peak Marathon on Sunday, August 20th, 2006. The run starts in Manitou Springs, CO and follows the Barr trail to the summit of Pikes Peak and then back. This is billed as the hardest marathon in the United States at 26.2 miles, 7815' of elevation gain, almost all on rocky trail, and topping out at the 14,115' summit of Pikes Peak for the highest point. As usual, Matt Carpenter destroyed the field, finishing in about 3hrs 35min. Peter came in at 5hrs 49min (beating his goal of sub-6) and I came in at 7hrs 17min (beating my goal of sub-7:30). It was an incredibly hard run, especially for my first marathon, but it was a great time!

Moab Alpine to Slickrock 50 Mile Run - Moab, UT - September 22, 2007

Peter and I ran the Moab Alpine to Slickrock 50 mile endurance run on September 22, 2007. The course was a 50 mile point to point that started on the south end of the La Sal mountains, outside of Moab, UT. If coursed mostly northward, crossing many passes and finally dropping all the way down to the Slickrock trail. The total elevation gain was 11,003' and the loss was about 12,000'. This was my 2nd attempt at a 50 miler, after my DNF at the San Juan Solstice. I was hoping to just squeak in under the 14 hour cutoff, but wound up far exceeding my expectations by finishing in 12:37. This is by far the most beautiful race I've run. The scenery was spectacular and the weather was absolutely perfect. Chris puts on a great race, I'd highly recommend this one for a scenic (but hard!) 50 miler.

On March 08, 2008 I ran the Land Between the Lakes 50 mile race in Grand Rivers, Kentucky. Conditions were rough: new snow, mud, water, and cold. The race was tough! I finished in 10:10:01. Jonathan Phillips (#115) ran his first race, the 23k and finished great!

Monarch Crest Trail - Colorado - Sept 05, 2004

Mason, Jay, and I rode the famous Monarch Crest Trail near Salida, Colorado on Sunday Sep 05, 2004. We woke to rime (ice that forms on cold things such as trees and rocks from humid air/clouds blowing over them) covering everything above 11,000'. The low at the trailhead (11,300') was 19F, but had warmed to a balmy 32F by the time we started at 10:00am. The rime actually gave the ride an awesome surreal quality. This trail is everything you've read about and easily lives up to it's Top-5 in the US ranking... I highly recommend it!
